According to Musk, electric semi-trailers "have really improved a level" compared to conventional trucks that use diesel engines. But the question is, will logistics companies use this electric semi-trailer?
The price of this electric semi-trailer is not yet known. But for logistics companies with fewer trucks than UPS and FedEx, it may not be attractive. According to a report released by the US Department of Transportation in 2015, about 97% of the 1.3 million logistics companies have no more than 20 trucks. Nearly 91% of logistics companies have no more than six trucks.
"Fortune" said that in the eyes of logistics company Shenandoah driver Craig Holt, it will take a long time for electric trucks to appeal to smaller logistics companies. Forbes said that industry experts predict that Tesla electric semi-trailers can only travel 200-300 miles (322-483 km) on a single charge. Hult's container trucks typically refuel 300 gallons (1,136 liters) and can travel 1,400 miles (2,253 kilometers).
Hort said, "The key is to travel long distances as quickly and efficiently as possible."
Keenan Owens, the driver of food and beverage distributor Ben E. Keith, agrees with Hult’s point of view. He said that many drivers are paid by mileage. “If my truck can only travel for hours It is necessary to pull more goods to be competitive." Frequent charging at the Tesla charging station will reduce the driver's income by mileage.
Mike Hewitt, an associate professor of information systems and supply chain management at Loyola University in Chicago, said the increase in parking times would increase congestion and overall travel time. Hewitt believes that if the government does not invest in building more charging stations, Tesla electric semi-trailers will not be widely available, and President Trump's infrastructure construction plan is still under development.
"Fortune" said that because Trump government members have expressed their opposition to the Obama administration's response to climate change, the future of electric vehicles is still unclear - although Musk is a member of Trump's economic advisory board.
Although large logistics companies such as UPS have publicly promised sustainable development, there are not many actual actions. Hewitt suspects that small logistics companies will use Tesla's electric semi-trailers.
